Dev Journal – Old Game Engines

I decided to go through some of the older game engines that I build many years ago (this one was May of 2010). I had built it in a way where creating new puzzles and releasing a batch of new puzzles would be “easy”. It’s strange that I never thought about doing it until now.

Thank goodness I built an editor for this thing. I should probably put a “turn off sound” button in here… shouldn’t be too hard… maybe for part 3. I’ll release it into the wild in a day or two.

Match 3 – This Does Not Read Well

Did a simple art swap. This does not read well. Will need to experiment some more.

Match 3 Dev Journal Doodles

Just some drawings from my design journal. I should probably come up with a name for this game. I feel that it’s going to be something that I just plunk away at over an extended period of time, which is quite different from the “rush to finish” I get in other projects.

Dev Tidbit: The percentages you see in the second picture are loot table drops. What this means for this game is that when the board generates a new layout, it’s not simply “random blocks”. It will actually pull from a table based on percentages. The reason is that you wouldn’t want a randomized table where getting “treasure blocks” has has the same possibility of getting “quest point blocks” or “wood resource blocks”. Allows for level balance.

Release – Corn Dog Solitaire

Remember that corn dog themed Golf Solitaire game I was working on many, many months ago in 2012? I decided to spend some time and finish it. Hooray!

Also trying a simple Flash games portal experiment with it as well. Will post results in a few weeks.

Fat Knight – All The Artwork

Here’s all of the fun artwork for the Fat Knight game! The plot essentially has the fat knight traversing all the way to the evil wizard’s tower for some old fashioned “defeat evil”. The twist is that the fat knight is actually a big jerk and decides to use the evil wizard’s ring for selfish reasons. The twist’s twist is that the ring of power is actually too small for the fat knight’s fingers.

Lol.

Hex Grid Toolkit – New App for the Nexus 7 (Android)

hexgridtoolkit

It’s free! It’s free! It’s free!

I worked on this Nexus 7 (yes, I understand it’s technically “Android”, but I don’t have any other Android enabled devices to test against) application this weekend called “Hex Grid Toolkit”. It’s part of a, hopefully, long series of tabletop applications I’m making for the device to bring some convenience to tabletop game players as well as bring to attention my other site Board Game Toolkit.

The idea behind the app is that while I often like to play hex grid wargames with my friends during lunch and have developed a few rulesets to take advantage of relatively small boards, I’m not the biggest fan of carrying around the game board and having game pieces fall all over a diner table. This applications virtually creates the board as well as allows the ability to manipulate player tokens. This means only dice and player cards are required and you’re not worried about spilling salt over the game board only to wipe it off and lose track of all the pieces.

Current Features:

  • 9×14 hex grid
  • 6 different hex types: blank, asphalt, grass, water, sand, impassable
  • Up to 4 players on a single map
  • Hex paint feature for easy hex tile changing

Future Plans: Some features I’m hoping to add down the line would be the ability to save and load maps. This will at least help folks save some time. I’d also like to create a few more graphic sets to change the available hexes to players.

How do I get it? Access this Download Link with your Nexus 7. The app will work with non-Nexus 7 devices, but I can’t guarantee it will look right.

Tomato Engine 02 – Fat Knight – Released

I just released Tomato Engine 02 – Fat Knight! You can play it over at the Shen Games website.

My coworker brings up an interesting (and valid) point. I decided to turn off all in-game advertising when playing on the Shen Games site. I mean seriously, the vast majority of clicks really don’t happen there. Might as well make it as player friendly as possible.

Why are you still here? Go play!

Galactic Bombers – Basic Version

Galactic Bombers released today! Please check back on this post for more information on the Advanced Version. Plans include powerups, obstacles and additional skins.

Interested in playing on your Nexus 7 Tablet? You can download the APK file here! It will also work on any Android device, but its screen resolution is optimized for the Nexus 7.

Detective Tomato in Video Game Land

I started editing my Tomato Engine for the next game to see if the system itself is extensible. Turns out that getting this new gameplay into the engine wasn’t hard, it was simply making it so the game had more replay value. What was originally a linear adventure with one solution has now turned into a larger game with random paths for the player to traverse.

Here’s some artwork for the game. You may recognize some of these characters from video game history: Ape in Tie and The Lady.

More details about the game to come, but know that a free Flash version will be available and a higher res Android version as well. The latter will include other wonderful bonus items like all of the artwork exported (for avatar icons, of course) as well as the soundtrack.

Added Tabletop Games Links

I like to make tabletop games too. You can take a look by accessing it via the menu up top.
